The Chiriquí Viejo River, one of Panama’s most vital waterways, winds 100 miles from the slopes of the Barú Volcano to Charco Azúl Bay on the Pacific Coast.

The river nourishes the fertile Chiriquí Province highlands while its lush banks, teeming with tropical birds, draw a steady stream of tourists and retirees.

But the river’s abundance brings fierce competition for its resources.

More than a half dozen hydroelectric plants are in operation in the Chiriquí Viejo River basin. Local governments and private industry are also drawn to the river, a treasured source of rocks and gravel used for infrastructure. Dredging projects aimed at extracting this precious material are deeply controversial, with activists warning of permanent ecological scarring. See this background report.

The river’s power is also a source of tragedy; flooding claimed over 200 lives between 1980 and 2023, a former mayor said. Government agencies launch flood-control initiatives, but environmentalists question their effectiveness, arguing that some projects may inadvertently damage the river’s delicate ecosystem.

El río Chiriquí Viejo, una de las vías fluviales más vitales de Panamá, serpentea a lo largo de 160 kilómetros desde las laderas del volcán Barú hasta la bahía de Charco Azúl, en la costa del Pacífico.
